Hells Kitchen TV Show Can't Serve Food!

I've been trying to watch the Hells Kitchen TV Show as much as possible this season (when I'm not stuck at work overseeing a dopey dinner meeting). There has been one thing I've noticed that has me puzzled; they don't serve the food correctly!

I don't mean the cooks can't serve food correctly (they have enough problems so I won't pick on them here). It's the waiters.
They continually serve the plates of food from the guests' right-hand side. Did you see it again last night?

It was so obvious, especially at the table of 12 ladies (swimsuit models, yeah sure!) where they tried to serve the entire table at once. They had multiple waiters with 2 plates each go to the table but what did they do? They served from every which way possible. From the overhead shot you can clearly see one waiter on the left side of the table walk in between two guests and serve one plate to the person on the left and the other person on the right at the same time with each hand. What the hell is that!

Now I know it's only a stupid TV show and we shouldn't expect perfection, but Chef Ramsay certainly does expect perfection from the other chefs on the show. But nobody apparently pays attention to the service from the waiters.

As I always tell my staff; we don't book the event, we don't plan the stupid menu, and we don't cook the food. We have only one job to do; provide the best possible service to each guest based on industry standards of food service.

The basic rule #1 for a waiter is:

Serve from the left, clear from the right!

It's not that hard to do. Well I guess for the Hells Kitchen TV Show it is...

This proves again that banquet waiters are better than restaurant waiters. Our waiters would NEVER serve the wrong way. Would they...?

P.S. I just found this link. Click here to play "Hell's Kitchen The Game".

I totally know what you mean, I am constantly noticing people who serve poorly when I dine out or watch tv...

Makes my blood boil, I guess the more servers who suck the better for those who do not right?

been there done that!! MJC said...

Easy S.O.P. for those who can't remember to serve from the left and clear from the right~
LEAVE RETRIEVE
It rhymes and it reminds them which side is which. Beat the stupid clownwaiters into submission with it,Repeat it DAILY at the pre function meetings

I agree with you that if one guest was served from the left at the same time as one from the right that is bad service. However you have to keep in mind the different styles of service, French, and Russian are both service from the left. However I believe that American service is serve and clear from the right in a clockwise fashion serving females first and host last. This is what I was taught during my Food Service Management degree as well as what is now being taught at the Culinary Institute of America one of the top culinary schools in the US.

you realize the waiters your complaining about have to be banquet servers -dont you?

Then again maybe in Hollywood you can get wannabe actor/tress servers to work a gig that lasts only a few weeks just so they can seen on tv.

Then again they could ONLY make a wage being banquets because you know with the food quality issues let alone cook times they arent banking off the tips.

If the entire table was served at the same time, this was correct.
As a server I sometimes dinners with royalty, ministers etc.
Sometimes on these dinners every person on one table would be served at the same time. this means that the wait staff stands around the table and everybody sets down his two plates at his right and left at the same time. Thus the whole table gets their food at the same time. Especially with covered plates where next the taking off of the lids is well coordinated tis gives a great effect for the guests.
The reason that this method is not used much is that it is labor intensive and must be well coordinated.

plated meals is serve from the right, clear from the right.
Serve from the left only when serving from a tray or when the guests are serving themselves from a tray. And off course side plates n the left side.
