I hasn't been a good month for me. First I get a $15.00 tip from a customer that ordered $1400.00 worth of wine then I got stiffed last weekend. Here's what happened. When the bridal party arrived to take pictures before the ceremony (which was taking place in the garden), a man approached me and asked it I was the maitre d'. I said "Yes sir" and introduced myself. He said "So you're the one I need to see at the end of the party, right?" Well, that was a great opening conversation. I thought the money was in the bag.
The group walked outside to take some photos. I followed right behind with a few pitchers of ice water and cups since it was over 90 degrees. I offered everyone ice water and they was thrilled. The groom came over to me and thanked me, introduced himself and said "Did you meet my father yet?" "He wants to take care of you". Again, a great start of the night.
The party itself went fine, my staff did their usual great job and I was already counting my "soon-to-be" tip in my head.
At the end of the night the groom walked across the dancefloor, gave me a big hug and thanked me for a wonderful night. "Did you see my father yet?" "No, not yet" I said. "Oh, I think he went to his room for something and he'll be right back".
Well, you guessed it. He never came back.
...Stiffed again.
I need a REAL job!

I would have been pissed, I don't know if i could handle getting stiffed on something like a bridal party or on a 1400 dollar tab. I get pissed if i don't get at least 15% on any of my tickets. Thanks for the comment by the way
I used to wait tables and I hated it. Your post reminds me of then. There were a lot of good times. There was a lot of comradery between servers. But the actual work really wasn't fun.
I also love it when they give a small tip and they think they've done you a favor. You can see them beaming with pride from that $5 tip.
Green Orchid, you're right. Some know how to tip and some don't. I guess we must take what we can get! Thanks for stopping by.
Very interesting and entertaining to read. Great, valid comments. I have been in the industry for 16 years as both FOH and BOH, and management too. First of all there is a name for this kind of behaviour, it's called "the verbal tip" Infact, often, the more they thank you/shake your hand or even hug you, you can almost be certain the less your tip will be!
I hate when you get a really great tip, like 30 percent, then you get stiffed directly after, just to bring down your tip average, I love it.
