Poll Results: Which Is The Better Waiter?

November was a great month for this blog. I had great response for "guest blogger" month with 5 fantastic posts:
One from a sales manager, one from an ex-chef, one from a waiter, one from a fellow banquet manager, one from a waitress, and the last from a bartender. I hope you enjoyed their stories and will become frequent readers of their blogs.

But there was one bad thing about November; it's the poll I ran: "Which is the better waiter"?
The poll results are:
  • Banquet Waiters 7%
  • Restaurant Waiters 75%
  • Neither, the busser does all the work 7%
  • Why, the manager is best, of course 10%
This poll tells me three things:
  • My banquet waiters are too busy working to vote
  • There are a lot of restaurant waiters reading this blog and they're "stuffing the ballot box"
  • Or, I pissed-off enough banquet waiters over the years so they voted for the restaurant waiters to get me back
Either way I'm biased for my banquet waiters. Without them I wouldn't still have a job. They deal with my crap each and every day and still come back for more.

Hey, I got an idea...if I start being nice to the restaurant waiters, will they show us some sympathy and vote next time for my banquet staff? Yeah right !!!

The only thing about when I worked banquets were the longer hours.12 hours or more on your feet in a row. It's the hard part.I can't do it anymore. My body seizes up.Moving tables everywhere etc..For that banquet people need to be given their due.

don't take it personally, but ...
a) banquet waiters work longer shifts.
b) banquet waiters do a lot of physical labor, stacking chairs, moving tables... and when it's all done, a manager comes along a says to change the whole thing ... or the host of the party has another 20 people at the last minute.
c) banquet waiters pool tips and so the good waiters pull the load for all the shit birds.
d) 75% of banquet waiters don't have a grasp of the English language so the others who do, work harder taking orders, etc.
E) banquet work is sporadic, hit and miss, so only the most senior get any kind of stable, sustainable schedule.
sorry buddy, but it's just the nature of the beast.

part of the problem is the definition of "Better"
Certainly, most Restaurant Waiters are probably more knowledgeable about Wines and ypes of service, but they would be less inclined to turn a room over or be a 'Team Player" on a party of 1000.
A restaurant Waiter is usually a fairly sophistacted person and is able to converse with many different people.
A Banquet Waiter seldom has to speak direclty to a guest, but is capable of moving huge amounts of foood effortlessly.

Usually, really good Banquet Waiters form an upper Echelon of some sort and while they are not management per se, they lead the less experienced (which often times includes the Ex-Con Temp folk just trying to get through christmas)in order ythat the event is a success.

Sooooo.....if I was going to Staff a coal mine, I'd go with the Banquet waiter.
if i was going to staff a bookstore, i'd probably want the Restaurantuer.
But ey, what-do-i-no...i've been carrried out on my sheild every job i ever had...
i could'nt do either for long.

Hey, Banqman!
