Ok, we finally got through all the "holiday parties" and New Years Eve festivities and made it out alive, so to speak. We took our bumps and bruises, got yelled at by our boss and didn't get fired. Not bad. Well here's a quick look at how the final 2 weeks of the year went for me and what I had to deal with:- too many drunks
- too many ugly people
- a waiter that never showed-up for Christmas Eve & New Years Eve (later for you!)
- a couple of 2 tops that complained "the food was cold"
- the kitchen running out of oysters for the buffet (as usual)
- a member expecting a discount on New Years Eve (yeah right!)
- 3 tables that didn't have a reservation for the Christmas Eve buffet but insisted they should be let in (one was a 12 top!)
- the F&B Director wanting "perfect service"
- the coat check lady losing a jacket (there goes my bonus!)
- another waiter that wanted to go home early on NYE ("I have family staying at my house" she says)
- New Years Day buffet room that had no heat (thermostat bugged-out)
Have a holiday party horror story? Tell me about it and maybe I'll post it here for all to read!

A local and prominent woman in town who volunteered to cater a holiday party for 50 and it grew believe me, to 200(because she was a CIA graduate with experience, but was a stay at home mom) called and asked me to 'volunteer' and help consult with her, I would get press and meet some others that would bring me business...I only had input on menu and did not do the ordering...I told her she needed staff, she said she had plenty of volunteers, so I put together a 'to do' list, and guess what...the night of the event, she helped set up, only two volunteers (60+) and then after set up she left me in the kitchen to put it all together by myself (60+ and her wanted to go enjoy the party...later she admitted that it was all her fault for not listening to me...but I will never volunteer for a charity event again, and I have done many, but always very organized! That was my latest...I block out the past, well I try, but I have learned over the years...
I did get great press, and some god business and a lot of pats on the backs for the food, but it was not worth the headache...
When they "volunteer", that usually means they don't want to do too much work but want to look good while doing it. Then you'll get "volunteered" to pick up the slack.
